Mill Hollow Substation

The power distribution node for the lower valley, fed from Carraway Dam.

The Mill Hollow Substation stepped down and distributed electrical current from Carraway Dam to the residential and industrial users of Mill Hollow and the lower gorge. It occupies the Substation Lot on the southern edge of town.

The substation went offline when the Commission wound down operations in the late 1970s. Power to the lower valley can be restored when the dam is brought back to operational status.

Standing today

The yard is intact and the transformers are still on their pads. Nothing here generates anything: the substation only ever passed along what came down the line from Carraway Dam, and it will carry current again on the day the dam does. What lights it would bring back are the lower valley’s — Mill Hollow first, being nearest and lowest.
